Rockin' at the Hop Auditions

We’re turning back the calendar to the 1950’s!  “Sincerely, “Peggy Sue,” a “Teenager in Love,” “Where the Boys are,” “Bye, Bye Love,” Sh-Boom,” “Earth Angel.”  This Hit Parade of titles sets our feet to rockin’ ‘n’ a-rollin’ back to the beginning.  The Jitter-Bug, the Stroll, and the “Slow Dance” heat up the stage this summer as Gretna Little Theatre presents Rockin’ at the Hop, a tribute to the birth of Rock and Roll.

Preliminary auditions are scheduled for Saturday, April 4, 2:00 p.m. at the Gretna Center for the Arts, 101 Main Street, Gretna.. Teenagers and twenty-somethings who appear to be teenagers, this is the showcase for you. Choose any song from the early days of rock for your audition, bring a pal to dance, and we’ll have a rockin’ good time.  Previous theatre experience NOT required.

GLT is a fully volunteer community theatre, and we need pianists of any age for rehearsals and performance this summer. If you can play a hot piano, please join us Saturday to be one of our accompanists during June and July. Performance dates are the last weekend of July.

We need instrumentalists, particularly tenor and/or alto sax and bass guitar (upright or electric).

Rockin’ at the Hop is written, directed, and choreographed by the production team of Hal & Janina Shoemaker. Music teacher Brenda Velarde is our vocal coach, and guitarist John Mirando is music arranger.

Curtain Call: March 2015

Curtain Call:  our newsletter to Alliance members, sponsors, and participants
March 2015 edition
We have not been idle during this hiatus from production, but have been busily converting the main hall of the Center for the Arts into a black box theatre, preparing for auditions for the 2015 season, and organizing policy changes of the operation. There has also been continuing progress on fund raising.
Charles Converse has been rearranging space in the Center, building a gallery of seating, 50 seats, to better serve our productions. He has also rearranged interior walls so that we have a foyer, a performance space, storage space, and very important, backstage, dressing and wing space.
Janina Shoemaker has been adapting and editing an acting version of Middlemarch, a project begun over 20 years ago, and has progressed to the stage of first reading.  She has also been studying the scripts of the season for directorial notes.  Charlie has been studying the same scripts for scene designs.
Policy changes are needed to embrace the new seating and ticket selling, which will ensure audience members of having tickets for their seats. In the past tickets could be purchased at the door on any date. In future we suggest calling in advance to reserve seats for specific performance.  (434- 656- 3637)  We are presenting the first three of our shows at the Center, and the final two will be at the movie theatre. We will continue at our low ticket prices, $10 for general seating, $15 for musicals, and discounted tickets for seniors, students, and military.
Auditions for the season begin next week, Monday and Tuesday, March 23, 24, at 6:30, at the Center for the Arts, 101 Main Street, Gretna. Call backs are scheduled for March 30, if needed. Rehearsals will begin March 30 for the first show of the season, Cactus Flower, for scheduled performance May 22-24.
Cactus Flower is a romantic comedy by Abe Burrows, Broadway’s  celebrated producer/director. The leading roles in the Broadway production were Lauren Bacall, Barry Nelson, and Brenda Vaccaro. The film version starred Walter Matthau with Ingrid Bergman and Goldie Hawn.  Janina Shoemaker directs.
Also, auditions and registration will be held for The Light in the Mill, our teen theatre workshop. Rehearsals will begin April 6 at 4:00 p.m. and will run until performance May 8 and 9.
Light in the Mill is a mystery melodrama taking place in 1843, Lowell Massachusetts. This production is a learning experience with an emphasis on student participation in production elements, and research into the era. Rehearsals are after school, and all students, public and home-school are welcome. There are seven female and two male roles.  Crew positions will be filled by students as well. Janina Shoemaker directs.
Cactus Flower and Light in the Mill will be rehearsing during the same time through April and May, with set building and other gathering taking place simultaneously. Crew leaders and workers will be needed; interested back stage staff, please attend auditions for early organization.
The summer musical is a 50’s rock ‘n’roll show, developed, directed and choreographed by Hal & Janina Shoemaker. All music, dancing and singing is from the hit parade of the 1950’s. A preliminary audition is scheduled for April 4th at 2 p.m. at the Center for the Arts at 101 Main Street, Gretna. Energetic dancers and singers are needed for this retro look at popular music. Pianists are needed for rehearsal and performance. Brenda Velarde and John Mirando, collaborators. Singers, dancers, pianists: call Hal or Janina at 434-656-3637 if you have any questions regarding the audition.
A summer youth theatre workshop for elementary students is scheduled for June. The script is an adaption of Kipling’s Rikki Tikki Tavi, the tale of a mongoose protecting a family from a cobra.  Janina Shoemaker directing.
The final production of the season is August Wilson’s drama, Fences, scheduled for October. Auditions will be held in September, with Tim Bennett and Karen Coleman, producing/directing.
We regret the postponement of The Last Romance, but circumstance beyond our control……..
Your community theatre is embarking on several projects this season to enhance the theatre experience for the entire community. There is a need for your participation in all aspects from performance, to set construction, to organization of inventory, to publicity, to applause.  The renovation of the Center of the Arts drives our future. Come in to see where you can fit.  There is room for all.
